A van delivery service in Slough

29 09 2009

A van delivery service would be helpful if you need to get something from person to person, business to business or door to door that would be too expensive to send by post or too big or in some cases – too valuable.

Although there are van delivery services (sometimes known as same day courier services) attached to the mail service, you may find that these are very expensive. Save money every time by calling a van delivery service local to you – especially if what you wish to have delivered is nearby.

It could be that you have to move something from your home to send to a friend or family member and by having a courier delivery service at your disposal, you will be able to do this efficiently and easily.

There are smaller companies who are prepared to do this for you at a lower price than many of the bigger companies, why? because they have lower overheads and can adapt to the market place quicker than a larger company. Call around a few and make a price comparison on like-for-like services.

Unless you own a van yourself, it may be easier to get someone else to deliver an item or parcel to you so that you know your will get there on time, and freeing up your time (as well as knowing that some of them will be able to provide you with next or same day delivery). Sometimes even when you own a van, you need a professional courier service as you may not have experience in moving that type of freight or cargo.

You will find that some of the same day courier services will also be able to help you with light removals and for an extra price they will help you to pack the items into the van also. This will save you a lot of time in the long run.

A van delivery service will be able to give you a door to door service for a great price whether it is one or more item(s) that you wish to take from one place to another, it will mean that you do not have to do the job yourself but also means that the person taking on the job is fully qualified and knows exactly where they are going and what they are doing. The difference is in the delivery.

What to have to hand when calling your courier

28 09 2009

When you need a quote from a same day courier, there are some things you will need to know before they answer the phone!

1. What is the item to be transported?

2. How heavy is it?

3. What are it’s dimensions?

4. Collection Postcode

5. Delivery Postcode

Often we get calls saying “how much for delivery” but prices are worked out on the type of goods and services required. If you know the above 5 things, you will get your quote quicker.

Delivering your white goods

24 08 2009

One of the problems same day couriers face every day is how to load their vans. They quickly become experts in ‘what to put where’. For those that sell white goods such as fridges, freezers, washings machines etc this is a life-saver! It means their deliveries get wrapped, packed and dispatched in the fastest possible time.

But how do you know if your courier is able to deliver your goods?

First of all you need to enquire about vehicle size. A small van may fit a washing machine. It won’t fir a fridge-freezer in, and if they tell you their small van can then you are in trouble. Why? A freezer when laid on it’s side triggers an internal mechanism and will rarely work when plugged in on delivery. So you happy customer with their “eBay bargain” is not so happy. The fridge freezer you thought you had sold, is back in your garage and you are stuck with paying a courier that did exactly what you asked – they delivered the freezer.

Asking questions before you book your same day courier service is an invaluable way of determining whether your auction goods will arrive in one piece. Quite often the buyer is so obsessed with delivery price, the think the saving of a tenner is a big thing. They won’t be so happy if their goods are not working!

Quite often customers ask about insurance. How many couriers tell you they are insured? have you stopped to ask what for? Many insurance policies don’t cover second hand goods. Others don’t cover good that are not damaged in transit. What that means to you is if your white goods are damaged by the driver inadvertently whilst unloading, they are not insured. Many couriers are only insured in the goods are damaged whilst the vehicle is actually moving.

A bit of preparation can save you from buying an online auction nightmare.

Couriers are you on twitter yet?

23 08 2009

Twitter was originally devised for couriers said Jack Dorsey one of the founders in a newspaper report a few weeks ago. So why is the uptake of couriers to twitter been so slow?

Could it be they don’t understand what twitter is for?

Twitter for many is targeted marketing. For me it’s conversation marketing and relationship building with potential new customers. For some that’s hard work but if the truth be told, it really isn’t that hard.

Even if you have an account, what on earth do you tweet? How many times you have drove around the M25? not very interesting – but what about where the M25 hotspots are? Would you follow someone who could tell you with high accuracy where to avoid traffic trouble?

One of the interesting things that I have been told about twitter and couriers is that the couriers will only follow each other. Great! more opportunities for backloads and working collaboratively. Have you got a load you can’t cover – then tweet it out and see what comes back.

Recently I needed a 7.5 tonne vehicle to go to the Midlands from Essex. It was 4pm on a Friday afternoon, all the usual subcontractors had sloped off and I thought “I wonder what will happen if…” and I did. I tweeted out my request. Several of my followers who know what I do, re-tweeted my message and several sent direct messages offering assistance. My load was covered, I gained a new sub contractor after vetting and my customer was very happy.

So fellow courier companies, if your business is running perfectly you have no need of twitter, so please don’t bother with it. If you have lots of customers, please don’t bother with it. If you are wholly incapable of getting to know someone via social media, then just don’t bother with it.

Leave it all for me.

Space the not so final frontier

6 08 2009

Delivery is just gone off planet, and it’s not Fedex or DHL or UPS who are laying claim to it.

Yep, for out of this world deliveries, the race is over – Odyssey Moon has won and it looks like they will have the monopoly ;-)

… Last week Odyssey Moon, who was the first team to register for the Google moon shot, announced a whole new group of high-profile corporate sponsors. The nature of the new businesses involved – an investment bank, one of the world’s biggest advertising groups, a “space” insurance company and a global law firm – point to what’s really at stake here: profits. Odyssey Moon, by its own admission, wants to “capitalize on commercial opportunities created by renewed interests in exploring the Moon”.

Odyssey Moon clearly believes that, if it gets to the moon first, it will by default be able to monopolize lunar payload delivery services. Their website speaks of “building an ongoing commercial enterprise with early returns to our investors through a series of attractive commercial and scientific opportunities.”

via The new space race: first courier service to the moon.

Think global is so last season, Odyssey Moon have raised the bar – couriers now have to think Universal, I don’t fancy seeing their fuel bills though.

We’re just sticking with this planet ;-)

Courier service or parcel service?

6 08 2009

There are a few types of couriers / courier services and they can be easily confused when you don’t use them often.

First we have the most common type which are the parcel couriers or carriers. They take parcels and packages up to 25kgs in weight and when they are sorted (usually at a central depot) they are then multi- dropped to their destination points. Prices range from £ 5 upwards and delivery is done overnight, 48 hours, 2-3 days or another length of time that you specify.

Most people when they call a courier they assume that they are the parcel carriers, they are getting a low cost but high volume service. Breakages are not uncommon. Insurance tend to be low and it’s a nightmare to make a claim. The paperwork can tie you in knots!

Check before you book what type of courier service you are getting.

Then we have Same day couriers or Express couriers who work with urgent consignments that have to be delivered right NOW! These are more expensive because they are ad hoc and a specialist service in some cases. Arrow Light Haulage specialises in same day courier work with vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. Breakages, well so far we have had 100% success in 7 years of trading. We are very lucky.

Confusing the two types of courier service may mean your parcel is dispatched same day but costs you 4 times the price! Check which service you require and if you are not sure, then call for advice.
